
May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Health isn’t just about your liver, lungs, heart or brain, its about whole health, including your mind. 1 in 4 Americans suffer from a mental illness, thats about 56% of the population. Mental Health is associated with a green ribbon, wearing one this month can help tell others that you support everyones mental health. A mental illness can affect anyone, mothers, fathers, children, grandparents, teachers, and even yourself.
There are different types of mental illnesses, a few common ones are, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Suicidal and self-harming behaviors, anxiety, eating, behavioral disorders, OCD, and PTS. There are over 200 forms. How can you recognize any of these disorders? Most of these Illnesses are associated with pretty much the same symptoms, depression, sadness or irritability, excessive fear worry or anxiety, anger, changes in sleeping or eating patterns confusion, suicidal thoughts, and substance abuse. These symptoms may change for younger children, such as nightmares, poor grades, hyperactivity, and temper tantrums.
What can mental illnesses do to someone? One might isolate themselves and try to “deal with it” on their own never seeking help. Most people don’t know how or are ashamed to get help. Most doctors will send you to a therapist, but there are different types of centers to help as well. 30% to 70% of suicide attempts and victims, suffer from some kid of mental illness, the most common are Manic Depression and Bipolar Disorder. Having a mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of, everyone needs help now and then. There is a lifeline phone number to call if anyone is feeling low and want to talk it out.
